Whitman County Overview
Whitman County Superior Court Clerk
The Whitman County Clerk of the Superior Court is the record-keeping and financial officer of the Superior Court. The Clerk is an independent elected official whose role is to preserve the public's access to fair, accurate, and independently established court records. Located in the executive branch, the Clerk provides external oversight of the judiciary without legislative or executive interference. This separation of powers is fundamental to the role of the county clerk in Washington's court system.
The Whitman County Access to Court Records page explains how to view and request court records. Court case records are open to the public with some exceptions and are available for free viewing at the Clerk's Office during business hours. Based on the Clerk's scanning efforts, all new filings and many older filings are only available electronically. Paper filings are not always retained except where required by statute. To request copies, email the Clerk with the party name, case number, and desired documents. The Clerk will reply with the cost and method.
Older case files are stored in a secure, vaulted location. If you want to view a case file more than ten years old, provide at least 24 hours notice before your visit. Individuals who want to listen to previously recorded proceedings may do so in the Clerk's Office. There is no charge to view documents at the Clerk's Office.

What Whitman County Court Records Contain
Whitman County Superior Court records cover the full range of case types. Felony criminal cases, civil lawsuits, family law matters including divorce and custody, probate, guardianship, and mental commitment cases all generate docket records maintained by the Clerk. Each case gets a cause number when filed. Every document submitted under that cause number gets its own docket entry. The docket is the official log of the case from start to finish.
Most records filed in recent years exist only as electronic images. The Clerk's scanning program has converted most older paper filings to digital form as well. This means for the vast majority of Whitman County cases, you can view the record on the public terminals in the Clerk's Office without waiting for physical files to be retrieved. The exception is files older than ten years stored in the secure vault, which need advance notice.
Restricted case types that are not available for public viewing include adoptions, sealed cases, certain juvenile dependency and non-offender records, and mental illness commitment proceedings. If you need access to a restricted file, you must have a legal right or court order. The Clerk's Office can confirm whether a file is restricted before you make a formal request.
The Washington State Digital Archives holds older Whitman County Superior Court case files that may not be accessible through the current clerk's scanning system.
