Understanding Court Jurisdiction in Lewis County

Lewis County Superior Court has general jurisdiction: it handles all felony criminal cases, civil matters over $100,000 in dispute, divorces, adoptions, and appeals from lower courts. Lewis County District Court has limited jurisdiction, covering misdemeanor crimes, traffic violations, civil claims under $100,000, and small claims. If you are unsure which court handles your matter, the general rule is this: felony or complex civil case, go to Superior Court; misdemeanor, traffic, or small claims, go to District Court.

Both courts are physically located in the same building, the Law and Justice Center at 345 W. Main Street. That makes it easy to navigate between courts if your matter needs attention at more than one level. The Clerk's office on the second floor is the best starting point for most court docket questions in Lewis County since staff can direct you to the right court and provide information on current filing requirements.
