King County Court Docket Records
King County court docket records are searchable through the KC Script Portal, a system operated independently by the King County Superior Court Clerk. Unlike most Washington counties, King County does not use the statewide Odyssey Portal for Superior Court records. The KC Script Portal is the main tool for searching active civil, criminal, family law, probate, guardianship, and juvenile cases. King County is the largest court system in Washington, with courthouses in Seattle, Kent, and at the Juvenile Court facility. Knowing which portal to use and which courthouse to contact will save you significant time when searching King County docket records.
King County Overview
King County KC Script Portal for Court Dockets
The King County KC Script Portal is the official online system for searching Superior Court case information. It provides case number and participant name search functionality. The portal is operated by the King County Superior Court Clerk's Office and is separate from the Washington State Odyssey Portal used by most other counties. If you try to find a King County Superior Court case on the Odyssey Portal, you will not find it there. You must use KC Script for Superior Court matters.
Through KC Script, you can search accessible cases including civil, criminal, family law, probate, guardianship, and juvenile offender cases that are not confidential or sealed. The portal also offers low-cost options for purchasing and viewing case documents online. This is a significant advantage over counties where documents are only available in person or through Digital Archives. Attorneys and frequent users can subscribe to KC Script for enhanced document access features.
The King County Superior Court Clerk's public records access page outlines what is available online versus in person. One key limitation: matters filed before July 1, 1979, and stored on microfilm are only available for viewing during business hours at the Clerk's Office at the downtown Seattle location. If your research involves older cases, you will need to visit 516 Third Ave, Seattle, in person.
For e-filing status and portal maintenance notices, check the KC Script Portal directly. Attorneys and self-represented litigants can confirm the system is operational before submitting filings.
The KC Script Portal button links directly to King County's independent Superior Court case search system, which operates separately from the statewide Odyssey Portal.
King County Superior Court Locations and Docket Access
King County Superior Court is the largest trial court in Washington. It handles felony criminal cases, civil matters, family law, probate, juvenile, and mental health commitment proceedings. The court operates from three main locations: the King County Courthouse at 516 Third Ave in Seattle, the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, and the King County Juvenile Court facility. Understanding which courthouse handles which case types will help you know where to go and which clerk's staff to contact.
The King County Superior Court general information page provides department-level details, including which judges are assigned to which departments and which courthouse each department sits in. Some departments rotate between Seattle and Kent. If you are attending a hearing or need to file documents at a specific department, check the court's calendar page to confirm the location for your scheduled date.
Exhibits and specialized records questions go to DJA.Exhibitclerk@kingcounty.gov. For general records access questions, Danielle Anderson at danielle.anderson@kingcounty.gov is an alternate contact. King County uploads hearing recordings directly to approved transcribers rather than distributing audio CDs, which streamlines the transcript request process compared to many other Washington counties.
Note: King County Superior Court is not included in the statewide Odyssey Portal. For district and municipal court cases within King County, use the Washington Courts Case Search, which does cover those lower court records.
The King County Clerk's Office provides multiple contact channels through the KC Script Portal for records access, including email, phone, and live chat support options.
Searching District and Municipal Court Dockets in King County
King County has an extensive District Court system covering areas outside incorporated city limits. The King County District Court handles misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic infractions, civil claims up to $100,000, small claims, and protection orders for unincorporated King County and several contract cities. District Court case information is searchable through the Washington Courts Case Search statewide portal, not through KC Script.
Many cities within King County operate their own municipal courts. Seattle has a large Municipal Court that handles ordinance violations, traffic infractions, and misdemeanor cases within Seattle city limits. Bellevue, Kent, Renton, Auburn, Federal Way, and other cities also maintain separate municipal courts. Each of these courts keeps its own docket records. The Washington Courts Case Search covers most municipal courts and is the starting point for looking up cases from any of these city-level courts.
For King County District Court specifically, the court operates multiple locations. The statewide portal will show which courthouse a case is assigned to. If you need to request copies of District Court records, contact the District Court clerk at the relevant location rather than the Superior Court Clerk's Office. The two systems are administratively separate.
King County Court Docket Records and GR 31
Washington General Rule 31 sets the framework for accessing King County court records, just as it does for all Washington courts. The rule creates a presumption of public access to court docket records with defined exceptions. Most civil and criminal docket entries are open to the public. Exceptions apply to sealed cases, juvenile non-offender records, adoption files, mental health records, and confidential family law documents governed by GR 22.
Because King County's court system is so large, it has developed more detailed internal procedures for records access than most smaller counties. The KC Script Portal provides a relatively accessible way to view case-level docket information online. For document-level access, the portal offers both free previews and paid download options, depending on the case type and filing date. Cases filed before the digital cutoff date require in-person inspection at the Clerk's Office.
The microfilm cutoff for King County is July 1, 1979. Cases filed before that date exist only on microfilm and can only be viewed in person at the downtown Seattle courthouse during business hours. If your research involves older case history, build in time for an in-person visit. Staff can pull microfilm records for you, but there may be a wait depending on how many requests are in queue that day.
